Whether or not E3 is held in 2022, the Xbox and Bethesda showcase will take place. Not only does this make us wonder if E3 is still necessary, but it also makes us wonder what might be unveiled to further strengthen the Microsoft Game Studios roster when the showcase goes live on June 12.
The first-ever Xbox Bethesda presentation took place at E3 2021 last year. While new game announcements were plentiful, the presentation was a bit of a letdown, with an overreliance on CGI trailers and little in the way of actual gameplay.
We’d want to see that change this year, and it should. We haven’t even seen gameplay for many of the games Microsoft Game Studios has revealed for Xbox Series X|S and PC. This year’s Xbox and Bethesda presentation is the ideal venue for a gameplay showcase of a number of future games, including Starfield, Fable, Redfall, and possibly Perfect Dark, to name a few.
There will almost certainly be a slew of announcements linked to games that have already been released. Details on the Forza Horizon 5 expansion, as well as content updates for Halo Infinite, Sea of Thieves, and Microsoft Flight Simulator, are expected.
Here are five titles we’d like to see at the Xbox and Bethesda event, regardless of whether they’re safe bets or complete pipe fantasies.
With a current release date of November 11, 2022, it’s quite likely that we’ll see a gameplay reveal of Starfield during the Xbox and Bethesda event. That’s also not unusual for Bethesda. You may recall that Fallout 4’s first gameplay was presented at E3 2015, just months before the game’s release in November of that year.
Starfield will be Bethesda’s next massive RPG adventure, swapping the high fantasy of The Elder Scrolls and the post-apocalyptic setting of Fallout for a spacefaring sci-fi adventure. Apart from the game’s location, very few details have been published about the game thus far, thus we fully expect a big vertical slice to be presented at this year’s presentation.
We do know that Starfield will be massive. According to a former developer, the game may need to lose a large amount of material if it is to arrive on time.
Redfall, a co-op first-person shooter being developed by Arkane Studios, the studio behind hits like Deathloop, Prey, and Dishonored, is another big Bethesda title we’d want to see make an appearance. With a resume like that, Redfall shouldn’t let anyone down.
So far, we’ve only seen a single CGI video from the game, which was unveiled during last year’s Xbox and Bethesda expo. The trailer, which introduced the game’s playable characters and a fantastically scary, vampiric backdrop, was admittedly entertaining to watch.
Redfall needs to stand apart in a gaming world where co-operative shooters are a dime a dozen if it wants to attract and retain a large audience. Thankfully, Arkane has a history of producing outstanding first-person shooters.
We’ve been hoping to witness even a smidgeon of gameplay for Playground Games’ Fable since that first CGI trailer. The announcement trailer, which teased a darkly comedic fantasy world, was exactly on-brand, promising a revival of the much-loved trilogy originally developed by Lionhead Studios. But it didn’t tell us anything else about the game.
Aside from a few promising industry recruits, there have been few details so yet. There’s a combat designer from CD Projekt Red among them, as well as writers who’ve worked on games like Borderlands and Batman Arkham Asylum.
Xbox has a history of announcing games with CGI videos and then remaining quiet about them for years. Despite assurances from Xbox CEO Phil Spencer and Playground developers that the game is moving along, We won’t know for sure until we witness Fable in action, though. That’s something we’re hoping for during this year’s Xbox and Bethesda expo.
The Perfect Dark reboot is presently being created by new AAA company The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics, who were responsible for the great Tomb Raider reboot trilogy and… Gex, and is arguably one of Xbox’s most intriguing announcements in recent memory. Do you recall Gex? He is sorely missed.
Perfect Dark on the N64, a spiritual successor to GoldenEye 007, is one of the most influential first-person shooters of all time, and its heroine Joanna Dark became a popular gaming icon almost immediately. Perfect Dark Zero, a mediocre Xbox 360 game, was released five years later. As a result, the relaunch (which is said to be a third-person action game with a focus on stealth) must deliver.
However, reports that the game is locked in development hell don’t seem well for the project. As a result, we believe Perfect Dark’s appearance at the Xbox and Bethesda showcases is a long shot, but we’re hoping for at least some new information about the project, such as a new trailer or a tentative release date.
A new Banjo-Kazooie
And now for the announcement of a pipe dream. With the exception of Killer Instinct from 2013, the Battletoads remake, and the excellent Rare Replay compilation, Xbox has largely ignored developer Rare’s vast library of fantastic IP. We believe it is past time for that to change.
While we have fond memories of various Rare games (Jet Force Gemini and Grabbed by the Ghoulies come to mind), the legendary bear-and-bird duo has to be next on the list for a comeback.
We’re not requesting a new Banjo-Kazooie for nostalgic reasons. Platformers in the style of collectathons are arguably back in style right now. In recent years, big hits like Sackboy: A Big Adventure, A Hat in Time, and Super Mario Odyssey have demonstrated that there’s still room for more There is still a sizable market for this type of game, which Xbox should take advantage of. And it has the ideal IP for doing so with Banjo-Kazooie.
Is E3 still required at this point?
Despite the fact that E3 2022 has been cancelled in its entirety, the Xbox and Bethesda showcase will still take place – and at the same time as last year.
In recent years, Sony’s State of Play showcases have evolved to a larger emphasis on digital presentations. With its Nintendo Direct model, Nintendo has been doing it for the better part of a decade. As a result, we fully expect both firms to hold their main events around the time E3 would regularly take place.
The significance of E3 on the industry, then, appears to be dwindling. That’s especially true when you consider each publisher’s digital presentations and events like Summer Games Fest, which fills the void with its own bespoke conference of new game releases. As a result, since that publishers and other third parties aren’t obligated to attend, E3 faces the risk of becoming obsolete.
We’d be sad to see the annual gaming event vanish because it has its own peculiarities and pleasures. It’s especially useful for those who are visiting in person because they can get a sneak peek at the games through hands-on demos.
The great lure for the casual watcher, though, is the announcements, the world premieres, and the unexpected revelations. In the absence of E3, none of this is lost
, as publishers’ customised presentations demonstrate. With that in mind, it’s difficult to determine whether gamers will be interested even if E3 returns next year.
