MADRID, Spain — Prosecutors in Spain announced Friday that they will seek an eight-and-a-half-year jail sentence for Colombian music diva Shakira if she is found guilty of tax evasion.
For the years 2012 to 2014, Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was accused of neglecting to pay the Spanish government 14.5 million euros in taxes, according to court documents. According to the prosecution, a fine of 24 million euros is also on the table.
Shakira is accused with six counts in the indictment. An offer of settlement was made by prosecutors this week, but the musician turned it down in favour of a trial. Trial dates have yet to be determined.
“Shakura has always cooperated and complied with the law, showing excellent behaviour as an individual and a taxpayer,” her publicists in London said on Friday in a statement. She was charged by her publicists of breaching her rights by the Spanish Tax Agency.
According to Shakira’s Spanish public relations staff, she has deposited the 3 million euros in interest and the money she allegedly owes.
Catalan tax authorities have claimed that between 2012 and 2014, the Grammy winner spent more than half of each year in Spain and should have paid taxes.
A romance between Shakira and Gerard Piqué, the FC Barcelona player with whom she has two children, terminated recently after 11 years of dating. Barcelona was where the family used to dwell before they relocated to the United States.
